Uploaded short edit of a video record from Immersion that took place this Thursday (12.2) at London’s The Flea Pit.

Dialog (http://www.myspace.com/dialogmusic), as I found out, liked my previous Immersion appearance (the [‘coo]-[‘coo] thing) and asked Evan (who organizes this wonderful event) if I could play with him.

I was listening to his MySpace tracks while drawing things to my sketch book - modelling them and animating. I’ve done a lot of 3D work and it seems to be a way for me to go now.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this session, thanks to both Evan and Dialog for inviting me!

Clouds gather over the South Mountain, rain falls on the North Mountain.

I’ve came across this koan some time ago while rendering&wondering around the internet.. I drew it in my sketch book and forgot about it. Then, few weeks later, when snow start to fall I remembered it and wanted to see that illustration in 3D and animated. Added some sound and that was it.

Next Immersion is approaching and so I spent some time developing new idea for content/concept.

As both my house and office changed address recently, I’m now spending quite a lot of time on a tube, usually reading free London papers. Today I thought of illustrating and animating some of articles that stay on my mind by the time I get home.. which now is my concept for the next Flea Pit night..

I’ve been overloaded with work of different kinds recently, so I left Processing Monsters to live they own lives for a while but their time will come - that’s for sure. I’m putting together ideas how to melt them into one piece of video/animation that would somehow had the original idea within..

Processing Monsters:

After I’ve done a couple of those monsters, you could see bellow, I decided to make it a collaborative project, that everyone is welcome to contribute to and at the end I’m gonna take all the monsters and use them in a short music reactive video.
The bottom line is to encourage others to learn Processing by exploring and experimenting with open source code..

So if you feel like it, run your Processing and give a birth to some Monster!

[‘coo]-[‘coo] is software for live visual performance written in AS3. It allows me to combine old fashion frame-by-frame animations with videos and code generated visuals.

Usual vj software consist of one screen with controls and footage and another one with output. Obviously audience can’t see your controls.
For [‘coo]-[‘coo] only one screen has been used - a virtual canvas - so both me and audience share the view and controls are part of the visuals.

For the first performance (Oct 2nd, 2008, Immersion @The Flea Pit, London) I was paired with musician King Dice, listened to his Carousels and Nothings and created a couple of videos and animations + a bunch of code sketches that either react on mouse movement or live their own visual life.

Sketches that react on mouse movement are an important part of the concept. The whole process must be therefore performed according to playing music - if it’s calm and slow the mouse cursor can’t disorderly move around as that would generate chaos and flickering.

Immersion 2 Oct 2008:

PixelPusher kindly invited me to be a part of Immersion night. As it says on the website, Immersion is a free-entry experimental music/visuals/sound-art event featuring a live audio-visual soundtrack of electronic atmospheres, noisescapes, pulses/rhythms and tones/drones.

I spent last two/three weeks developing my own piece of “software” for live performance, so I can combine my old fashioned animations with code generated stuff I’m messing around with recently - more detailed info is on it’s way.

Basically, I got this idea of creating a tangible video mixer made from old phone with rotary dialer, so I went eBay, found this appropriate looking model, bought it and ripped guts out of it.
Then I spent quite a lot of time on the ear footage (I’ll put some mixed showreel up soon) - I used Cinema 4D for 3d compositions and After FX for the rest.
From my observations how people interacted with it, they mostly enjoyed the camera build in the ear piece as it brings some surrounding elements (like their own faces) and “direct interaction” on the screen, and they often even didn’t try to dial up different footage, as they probably thought it’s all about the camera.. :)

Plonk http://rmx.cz/plonk/ is an unusual sequencer based on audio-visual dialogue between characters.

I started with an idea of placing objects on a stage and having a ball bouncing from them - and playing different samples.. it was quite fun, but the sound output was random too much.. even too much for me.. so I brought it back to relatively “boring” from-left-to-right-going-playhead concept..

I also made all the samples my self, by using either midi and Pure data, or playing around with oscilloscopes.

Fish feed is my first “data visualization” project. It connects to the worlds most popular news feeds and drains news out of them. Then, it calculates the most used worlds (that are longer than 7 characters) and displays them as fishes you can simply interact with. The feature to choose make-zine/arduino blog rss channels instead of news is still yet to be added…

Went out with my camcorder.. this is what I captured.
My experiment with difference matte in After Fx. All went pretty smooth as I worked with a footage in quite good quality (about 1440x860px or something like that) but still, I had to cut traffic lights out manually in Photoshop and do couple manual tweaks to the girls crossing street to vanish out some flickering..
